MFM Design Inc., a Washington, DC, design firm, provided extensive design services for the new visitor facilities at Mount Vernon.

Since 2003, MFM Design Inc. of Washington, DC, has worked directly with Mount Vernon and in conjunction with GWWO Architects of Baltimore, MD, on interior design, exhibition design, and wayfinding graphics for the new and renovated visitor facilities on the Mount Vernon estate. With GWWO, MFM was responsible for interior design of the 7,000-square-foot lobby and two theaters within the Ford Orientation Center, and the main and membership lobbies of the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. MFM conceived and developed the contemporary character of these spaces, enriched with a warm palette of stone, woods, and textiles. Working directly with Mount Vernon, MFM also redesigned the lobby of the existing Inn complex to harmonize with the adjacent Education Center. The newly-designated Vaughan Reception Hall incorporates design elements from throughout the estate and features a terrazzo floor inspired by Samuel Vaughan’s drawing of the mansion and its environs as they appeared in 1787.
