MFM Design Inc., a Washington, DC, design firm, provided extensive design services for the new visitor facilities at Mount Vernon.

MFM Design was engaged by Mount Vernon to conceive and design all displays and signage within and around the Orientation Center, and in select areas within the Education Center. Notable display elements within the Orientation Center include an aerial rendering of the estate as an aid to visitor orientation; the life-size bronze figures of George and Martha and their two grandchildren (sculpted by Studio EIS); the installation of a large stained glass window featuring scenes from Washington’s life; and a new frameless glass enclosure for Mount Vernon in Miniature with an expansive backdrop mural. Within the Education Center, MFM designed the carved stone Wall of Honor recognizing the hundreds of generous donors who made the project possible, and the display on the preservation and education work done by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association from its inception to today. MFM’s approach was to create a seamless integration of visitor comfort and services throughout the complex.
