Seeking a lost city
Maryland’s first capital was abandoned by 1708, and St. Mary’s City gradually disappeared beneath farmland and forest. Since the 1970s, historians and archaeologists have been rediscovering the site that was “once the Metropolis of Maryland.” MFM Design and SmithGroup Architects are developing a new interpretive center that will explore recently revealed secrets of the colonial past at this National Historic Landmark. Opening in 2014.
